The Dutch Association for Philosophical Practice (VFP) proudly announces hosting the 10th International Conference on Philosophical Practice. The 10th ICPP will be held from August 11 – August 14, 2010 at the International School for Philosophy (ISVW), Leusden, The Netherlands. The official language is English.
The main theme is EXPERIENCE IN PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTICE.

Nearly 190 people attended the IX ICPP (including organizing staff), from 16 different countries: Italy, Israel, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, France, Luxemburg, the USA, Belgium, Finland, and the UK. There were also virtual contributions from 6 non-participating countries: Columbia, Ecuador, Ireland, Mexico, Moldova, and Peru.

During the conference there were 44 lectures (including 8 plenary sessions), 16 workshops, 6 forums and 7 workgroups (philosophical cocktails, cafés, lunches, P4C sessions and public debates).

The conference website pages have been visited more than 9.000 times by people all over the world: 27 countries in Europe, 11 in Asia, 10 in Africa, 8 in the Americas, plus Australia and New Zealand (data refers to English version only).

Conference shuttle service timetable

We are now able to provide participants with the shuttle service timetable from Cagliari airport to Carloforte on the 15th and 16th July and the return trip on the 20th July. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to publish the list of passengers for each shuttle on-line, but on arrival at Cagliari airport, there will be a member of the staff who will have a list of the people reserved on each bus. The organizing secretary is not responsible for the people who are not registered conference participants or accompanying persons.

The bus shuttle service is free to registered conference participants and accompanying persons. However, we would like to point out that the ferry ticket to Carloforte is not covered by the conference fee and costs €5.

Conference events

Amongst the various events connected to the conference, we would like to remind participants about the lectio magistralis 'Finale' of Fabio Mauri, a very important contemporary Italian artist, whose works have been displayed around the world for more than half a century, on Saturday 19^th July in the afternoon.

On the evening of the 17th July, at the Mutua Cinema, the short film 'Sonos 'E Memoria' will be shown, followed by a debate with the director of the film, Gianfranco Cabiddu.

On the evening of the 18th July, at the Cavallera Theatre, there will be an interesting exhibition of scientific experiments conducted by Prof. Guido Pegna from the Department of Physics, Cagliari University.

Apart from some works by Fabio Mauri, the conference will also hold other photographic exhibitions, including those of Luca Nave, Fabrizio Biasin e Simona Cosa.

In the last couple of days we have fine-tuned the programme and made a couple of small changes. In particular, we have changed some of the participants’ names for several of the forums, and provided more details of the events surrounding the conference.

As well as the timetable of events, there are also links to all the speakers' abstracts.
We advise participants to book the sessions they wish to attend, by downloading and filling in the booking form and sending it to officina.filosofica@yahoo.it.
Those who have booked places will take precedence over others, if spaces for a session are limited.

Introduce yourself to Carloforte

We would like to inform participants that there will be a stand where people attending the conference can display their own material: therefore, if you have written a book, an article or produced a CD connected to philosophical practice, that you would be interested in showing others, there will be the possibility to exhibit and, furthermore, sell this material.
As many of you know, the conference is a non-profit, self-funding event and does not receive independent funding. For this reason, a part of the money from the sales of this material will go towards the costs of running the conference.

Programme indications

The deadline for papers has now passed and the IX ICPP scientific committee is currently working on putting together the final conference programme, which will be published shortly.
In the meantime, we would like to provide participants with some general information about what will happen at Carloforte.
The conference starts on the morning of Wednesday 16^th July, with the official opening ceremony where the mayor and local authorities will be present. This will be followed by some plenary sessions and talks in the afternoon, then by the welcome cocktail in the evening at the Hotel Riviera.
Thursday and Friday are very busy days, full of lectures, workshops, debates, forums, initiatives with local schools, sessions on the beach, philosophical lunches, dinners and cinema. There will also be cocktails and the chance to sample some local traditional Sardinian dishes.
The conference will continue on Saturday morning and will finish in the afternoon, with the certificates of attendance being handed out then. The Gala Dinner will be held Saturday evening.

Among the participants are some of the best known philosopher practitioners from all over the world, as you can see from the list here to the right or from the new conference flyer.

Extension of the deadline for full papers

The deadline for sending in full papers has been extended to the

1^st June 2008.

We would like to remind you that the conference is not a formal academic event, but rather an international meeting of philosophers to discuss their philosophical practice. For this reason, we haven't given any strict guidelines for written contributions.

Accommodation update

We have contacted the conference hotels to ask for an accommodation update and it appears the hotels in the centre of Carloforte are almost all full. If anyone hasn't booked their accommodation yet, we suggest they do so as soon as possible, otherwise they risk not finding any vacancies.

The B&Bs, A ca' du paise and Il Carruggetto are already full, whereas the Hieracon and Riviera hotels still have a few rooms left. There are also places available at the Nichotel in the centre and the hotel Mezzaluna, which is situated outside town.

We would like to remind you that the special accommodation prices for conference participants are valid for booking made before the 15th May, after which the normal hotel price will have to be paid.

Abstracts and next deadlines

The scientific committee is now contacting those whose abstracts have been accepted for the conference. We hope to publish the list of all of these as soon as possible.
The deadline for contributors to send in their full papers is the 10th May.
We would like to remind that the acceptance of an abstract does not automatically enrol its author for the conference: they must complete their registration, if they haven't already done so, before the 30th April 2008. Failure to complete registration before this date means the acceptance of the abstract will be cancelled.
From the 15th April, the conference fee is the following:
250 euros (regular), 180 euros (student), 150 euros (accompanying person).
The deadline for registration is the 15th June. However, we would advise people to register as soon as possible and to book their accommodation, as places in the hotels are already scarse. We will give more information on this in the next post.

We would like to remind conference participants that Carloforte is situated on an island off the coast of Sardinia and it takes approximately one and a half hours, including the ferry crossing, to reach Cagliari airport.

For this reason, the organizing secretary has arranged for a shuttle service to be available from Cagliari airport to Carloforte on the 15th/16th July and back on the 20th July. The cost of the shuttle service is included in the conference fee, and it can be used by people and their 'accompanying friends and family', who have registered in advance for the conference. Places on the shuttle service are limited and reserved only for these people.

Anybody who has not registered and paid for the conference in advance, or who is arriving/departing on a date different from those mentioned above, will have to make alternative arrangements for transport, via taxi. There are no direct bus links between Cagliari airport and Carloforte.

We would also like to inform you that the first shuttle service from Carloforte to Cagliari airport on Sunday 20th July will leave at 7am. It will reach the airport at approximately 8.30am. Please take this into consideration when booking your return flight. If you need to leave before then, it is possible to book a taxi beforehand and pay separately. We have listed some private taxi companies on the conference website, in case anyone needs to arrange this.

On arrival at Cagliari airport, two members of the conference organization will accompany participants to the shuttle bus. On arrival at Carloforte, participants will be offered help and assistance, information about hotels, conference venues etc. Participants can then sign in for the conference at the Istituto Nautico, where they will receive the conference pack and conference pass, which allows access to all conference events and evening entertainment. It is not possible to pay for a pass on the spot.

N.B. The organizers will not be able to assist people who are not registered for the conference. They cannot accept payment of the conference fee on the spot, nor can they book taxis.

Extension of the deadline for abstracts

The deadline for sending abstracts has been extended to the 15^th April 2008.

All those who have sent in abstracts for the conferences will receive a confirmation of their acceptance by the 28^th April 2008.

ATTENTION: abstracts will only be accepted from conference participants, therefore abstracts must be sent in after registering for the conference (even if payment has not been received).

Languages of the conference

Following numerous requests, we have decided to hold some of the conference talks in Italian as well.
By doing this, we are taking into consideration that this event is an opportunity to increase the knowledge of international philosophical practice in Italy, whilst also being an opportunity to spread the knowledge of Italian philosophical practice abroad. Allowing some talks in Italian, helps promote these two aspects of the conference.
So all of the conference talks will be in English, but some of the seminars and workshops will be held in Italian as well. Consequently, abstracts and other contributions (which must all be sent in English) can also be sent in Italian, too.
The conference blog will also reflect this bilingualism, hence the first comment of each post will be the Italian version of the post itself.

In seguito alle numerose richieste pervenuteci, abbiamo accolto la domanda in merito alla possibilità di svolgere alcuni lavori della conferenza anche in italiano.
Considerando che questo evento è un’occasione unica per diffondere in Italia la pratica filosofica internazionale e, nell’altro senso, per far conoscere al mondo la pratica filosofica italiana, ci è sembrato giusto rispecchiare questa doppia direzione anche nell’organizzazione della conferenza.
Quindi tutti i lavori della conferenza si terranno in lingua inglese, ma alcuni seminari e workshop verranno riproposti in italiano. Di conseguenza, gli abstracts e gli altri contributi (che devono essere spediti tutti in lingua inglese) potranno pervenire anche in versione italiana.
Anche il blog si adeguerà al bilinguismo della conferenza, e mostrerà la versione italiana di un post come primo commento al post stesso.

Conference news

Thanks to your comments and observations, we have been able to 'fine-tune' a few organisational aspects of the conference. In particular:

1) The addition of a 'accompanying fee': as many participants will be accompanied by partners and family, we have arranged a sort of 'registration fee' for them, too. This offers all the same benefits - special prices and discounts on meals, entertainment, travel and accomodation - as those given to conference participants, with the exception of attending the actual conference itself and the welcome cocktail. It is not obligatory to pay the 'accompanying fee', but if you choose not to, prices for these things must be paid in full.

2) Bank charges: the conference fee must be paid in full - participants must make sure they cover any bank transfer charges.

3) Conference timing: in order to facilitate the organisation of the conference programme, we would like to stipulate that there will be only two types of seminars: Lectures - which will last 45 minutes; and Practical Workshops - which will last 90 minutes. We would appreciate it if participants interested in sending in contributions could take this timing into consideration when preparing their material.

4) Conference flyer: we now have an official flyer for the conference! This can be downloaded and printed from the 'Programme' page on the conference web site. (404 KB in PDF format).

Finally, we would like to remind you that in order to take advantage of the special accomodation offers, it is necessary to have received confirmation of your registration (and payment) for the conference first.

About the key-note speakers

As visitors to our site might have noticed, unfortunately Gerd Achenbach is unable to attend the conference. However, we are very pleased to be able to invite another historically famous and important international philosophy practitioner, Anders Lindseth.

Anders has been a pioneer of philosophical counseling in Norway, and a mentor to other counselors. Being himself influenced by Gerd Achenbach, Lindseth has a distaste for method and therapy, advocating instead the principle of "touched not-knowing”.

Ran Lahav, a leading theorist of philosophy counseling, teaches Philosophical Counseling at the School of Education, Haifa University (Israel) and organised, together with Lou Marinoff, the first ICPP in 1994. He also organised, with Jose Barrientos, the first International Philosophical Retreat on Contemplative Philosophy in Chipiona, Spain, in 2005.

Petra von Morstein, Professor Emerita of Philosophy and Philosophical Counsellor in Private Practice, is the founder of ASPP (Apeiron Society for the Practice of Philosophy), active since 1987. In October 2006 she was elected Vice President of the IGPP/ISPP (International Society for the Practice of Philosophy).

Umberto Galimberti is a key figure in philosophical practice in Italy. Philosopher (pupil of Karl Jaspers) and psychoanalyst (member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology), Galimberti is well-known in Italy and the world for his numerous publications and collaborations with newspapers and magazines.

Neri Pollastri and Lodovico Berra are the presidents of the two most prestigious philosophical counseling associations in Italy, Phronesis e SICoF.

Ludovico is a doctor, specializing in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and counsellor on existentialism. He's a teacher of the Università Pontificia Salesiana and the manager of the Scuola Superiore di Counseling Filosofico.

Neri was the first philosopher to open a philosophical practice studio in Italy and also the first to publish books on philosophical practice in Italian.

This blog is mainly intended to provide week by week information to do with the Ninth International Conference on Philosophical Practice, being held in Carloforte, Sardinia in July.
It has been created by the organizing secretaries of the Ninth ICPP in order to initiate a world-wide discussion about the conference: aims, participants, abstracts, programme, deadlines, etc.
Hopefully, once the conference is over, it will also be possible to collect and share comments, thoughts, photos and videos about this event, and philosophical practice in general.

We would also like this blog to become a useful tool for conference participants and interesting reading for visitors.
So please post any comments you may have, we would really appreciate your contributions!
